Sugar Bloom Beauty Boutique: Pamper Yourself

It's not a secret that I'm obsessed with makeup, skin care and all things organic. I had the pleasure of trying out a spa that recently opened in La Mirada called, Sugar Bloom Beauty Boutique. Sugar Bloom Beauty is owned and operated by makeup artist and esthetician,  Kristy Bradvica. Full disclosure, I've known Kristy for a very long time. She was the makeup artist for my engagement photos and wedding, over ten years ago.

Sugar Bloom Beauty Boutique is located at the Phoenix Salon Suites in La Mirada, California. The cool thing about Phoenix Salon Suites is that it's like a one-stop-shop for beauty lovers. Each proprietor rents their own suite, not chair. The experience is more personal and relaxed. Each suite is decorated to the owner's tastes.

The space was very cozy and comfortable. The products that Kristy has chosen for her facials are organic. She pays particular attention to the ingredients she uses on her clients.  She said she did a lot of research before choosing the skin care line, Skin Script. She likes how she can customize facials to her clients' needs and knows that the ingredients she is using, are healthy for us too, both inside and out.

I had the May special, the anti-aging Blackberry Facial. Kristy stated that, "Anti-aging care should begin in your twenties."  The smell of these products was amazing. You think, 'it's blackberry and it smells amazing, maybe I could eat it', but I was told, unfortunately, it wasn't edible.  The facial was divine. The Blackberry Mask, Kristy said, might tingle on the skin. I didn't notice much of a tingling sensation, for me it was more of a cooling sensation. No one likes pore extraction, but it's the price we pay for beauty. You can ask to skip that part if you're too sensitive, but what's the point of a facial if you don't clean your pores. After the pore extraction, Kristy used the cooling globes all over my skin. These glass orbs cool and refresh the face.

Kristy doesn't just specialize in facials and makeup, she's also licensed in spray tanning and sugaring. This was the first time I tried sugaring. Sugaring has been around since the time of Cleopatra. It's organic, water soluble and works with the temperature of your body. To find out the benefits of sugaring over waxing take a look on her Facebook page Sugar Bloom Beauty Boutique. To say that sugaring is like tiny kittens licking the skin, would be a lie. You do feel it, slightly, but you also feel waxing, hello you're pulling out the hair from your body. Sugaring had a resurgence in the 90's, remember when Monica, Phoebe, Joey and Chandler were stuck in Monica's room on Friends? That was sugaring. There are numerous benefits for the skin in sugaring. 1. The ingredients are natural  2.There's no damaging the skin, like in waxing and 3. Sugaring smooths and exfoliates the skin.  

Kristy also sells many of the amazing products that she uses. Facials begin at $65 with the option for add-ons, (like the refreshing cooling globes). Make sure to check for specials, like May's Blackberry Facial for $60.  Right now Kristy does accept walk-ins, but it's always best to make an appointment.

I Spend TOO Much Money on Stuff.

Looking back on my 2017, I've realized that I spend way too much money on "stuff" (a word I tell my students never to use in an essay). I'm not talking about the essentials like groceries, gas, car payment and utilities, I'm talking about all of the other things. Do I think that I'm a compulsive shopper? Maybe, that's why I'm trying to set some goals for myself. I have to STOP shopping. 

I was unemployed for 2 years and didn't shop at all. I wore clothes with holes and spent all the money that I had saved. Don't get me wrong, I have a savings now, but It doesn't have quite the amount that I would like or that I once had prior to my unfortunate circumstance (unemployment).  I learned at that time, that I didn't need "stuff" just because I wanted it. I really have to go back to that way of thinking. Just because I want something doesn't mean I need it.

Listed below are the things I spend my money on. I use my gift cards, but often times I go over the amount and have to spend some of my own money. 

1.  Makeup:  I'm obsessed with it. Days that I go without, my husband tells me I look beautiful. I know I don't wear it for him. I wear it for me. Putting on a face of makeup is very relaxing to me. It's like an art project, where you're painting a picture, in this case the picture is your face. 

2. Clothes: What girl doesn't like clothes? (and weights fluctuate, unfortunately).

3.  Shoes: See the comment from above.

4. Jewelry: Same sentiment as point #2

5. Purses: Same as above, BUT!!!! Once a year my husband go to Vegas. There is an outlet mall that we go to and  I usually hit up the Coach outlet store. I have one not to far from me. For some reason we never shop there.  In 2016, my husband and I went to Orlando and also went to the outlet mall there. I bought a bag, so when we traveled to Vegas in 2016, I didn't buy a thing. When we went to Vegas for the new year, I bought two.

6.  Books:  I love to read, but I have a backlog of books that would keep me entertained for the next five years. Many of my books (except those purchased at Barnes and Nobel with a gift card) are bought at used book stores or library book sales. 

7.  Movies: My husband and I got to the movies often. I love movies because I don't have to give them the long term commitment I would a television show. Don't get me wrong, I have a few shows I watch on regular T.V., I just prefer film. We know how expensive movies can be. 

8.  Coffee: I get Starbucks for free, It's a Grind I have to pay for. 

9.  Travel:  From this list, this is probably my favorite thing to do. An airplane ticket is very pricey, let alone two.

10: Entertainment other than movies: My husband and I like to do new things. This means tickets to Cirque de Soleil, concerts, musicals, plays, art exhibits, etc. These things cost money, but they're also giving us AMAZING experiences. This isn't considered "stuff", therefore these are the things that I will continue to spend my money on. 

For the month of January I implemented a "no buy zone", meaning that I am not buying anything other than food for the household. I will be shopping from my own stash. And as I write this, I realized that I did buy some shower gel and a blush from Flower Beauty. I also needed cotton balls, so I'm not sure if that counts. 

Moral of this lesson, I hated being unemployed, I really did, but I liked having a more simple life. 

My New Love.......

Yes, it's true, I'm in love. I'm in love with the new Kat Von D Saint and Sinner eye shadow palette.  I've had a love/hate relationship with the other products I've tried her line of cosmetics. I didn't care for the Studded Lipsticks or her Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks (which beauty professionals tell me are the best).  I loved the Tattoo liner I tried in my Ipsy bag, so I bought a full size. My disappointment in the liquid lipsticks prevented me from buying the palette released last holiday season, which I'll talk about later. I know, lips, eyes, two very different things.

I was always hesitant to try the shadows. They're so expensive and because of my dislike for the liquid lipstick, I wasn't sure I wanted to invest the money. Technically I didn't, I bought the palette with gift cards.

The aesthetic is beautiful. The cathedral design is beautiful, but the packaging is a bit bulky. This isn't a palette I'll be taking on vacation with me because it is so bulky.  I love the play on "Saint and Sinner". When you open the "Cathedral" doors, the left side of the palette is aptly named Saint, whereas the right is Sinner.  The colors looks like stained glass windows in a church. All of the shadows are given Catholic names. The mirrors are awkward to use, so I don't use them. It is awkward to hold the palette while trying to put on the shadows because of the design. So I just put it on my bed.

I watched a few YouTube reviews for this product. One girl absolutely hated it. I don't follow her so I can't link her video. I wonder if she's reviewing the same product as everyone else? Whether or not someone enjoys a product is very subjective, hence the review. One YouTuber I love, and watch all the time is Jen Luvs Reviews. I trust her fair assessment and her reviews are very in depth. She discusses ingredients and makes sure to swatch shadows on various skin tones. Here is a link to her review of the Saint and Sinner palette. I've heard many people, who are on the fence about purchasing this palette, say the shades are unwearable and not cohesive. That the scheme is all over the place, and that it looks difficult to create makeup looks with.  This is actually what one of my coworkers mentioned. She said she didn't know what to do with the colors. She said that it looks hard to create looks with. She wouldn't know where to begin. So she decided to not purchase this after all and she's a makeup junkie just like I am.

I know the colors in this palette are out there, but I love it. I'm not a makeup artist and my makeup probably looks bad, but I'm having so much fun trying to decide what colors to use. It's forcing me out of my neutral comfort zone, something we've all become accustomed to these last few years. If you love neutrals, then this isn't the palette for you.

The shadows themselves are richly pigmented and are very blend-able. I haven't used the top shades which are shadow toppers, so they're not fully pigmented. I do have a minor complaint with the shadows. They didn't seem to work well with my NYX shadow primer. The shadow creased and pretty much disappeared by the end of the day. I was thoroughly disappointed at first.  I even used glitter primer. Then I tried a look with my MAC pot and the shadows lasted longer. All day actually. If you have a proper primer, these shadows will look amazing!!

I really regret not buying the palette from last year. So I'm glad that I decided to get this one. 

I really admire Kat Von D and love that her products are cruelty free, something I look into before purchasing makeup. Of course, this isn't for everyone. At $62, this is very pricey. I wish I could love her Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks, because of the beautiful range of colors, but I can't, they just don't work for me. Her eye shadows on the other hand are AMAZING!  The best I've ever had, with the right shadow primer. I can't wait to she what she comes up with next year!

Too Faced Peaches Part II: Peaches and Cream Collection

I already gave a review of the Too Faced Sweet Peach line a few weeks back. I bought The Sweet Peach palette and a few of the lip oils when the line relaunched at the end of 2016. I love that palette, with the exception of a few colors.

Recently, I purchased some more products from the new Peaches and Cream collection, an extension to the Sweet Peach line. This time I bought the palette, a lipstick in I Think in Pink, a shocking pink, the primer, a setting spray, two blushes in the colors So Peachy and Peach Dream, and the only highlighter from the collection, Happy Face.

Let's start with what I loved............. the eye shadow palette. OMG! This is probably my new favorite from Too Faced. I think I like it better than the original Sweet Peach. The shades are all beautiful, are very pigmented and blend nicely. I feel like Too Faced got the colors right this time. There were a few shades in the original that I didn't really care for, but these colors are truly gorgeous. 

The scent is different than the Sweet Peach palette. I think that palette smells like the peach gummy rings I used to get at the movie theater, while this one smells like Fuzzy Peach, the old shower gel from The Body Shop. I worked at The Body Shop in the late 90's and that was my FAVORITE shower gel. The fragrance from this line takes me back to a simpler time.  I don't love the fragrance, I prefer the scent of the Sweet Peach palette. 

I love the packaging. It's very sleek.  Too Faced always has the cutest packaging, and while that's not a reason to buy a product, it helps to pique my interest in it. In this case the quality of shadows and packaging are both winners!!

Now to what I liked........ the blushes and highlighter. This wasn't a love for me. I didn't buy the blushes or highlighters in the last peaches launch, I'm not sure why I decided to buy them in this one. They're just "meh". I'm very fair, almost pasty, and Peach Dream barely gives me a wash of color. These blushes are infused with peach and sweet fig cream. Interesting, I ate some sweet fig creamy preserves this morning for breakfast?!?!?!?! Anyway I digress. To get any color payoff, I can only apply these with my fingers. They are a cream to powder formula. These blushes aren't horrible. I like them and I'll use them, I just don't love them and I probably won't buy them again.

The highlighter wasn't a favorite for me either. I have so many highlighters that I love more. It's the cream to powder formula just like the blushes. I'm not a fan of this type of formula.  Again, I don't hate it, I'll use it up, but won't buy it again.

My only regret.....the lipstick, I Think in Pink. It's horrible. I know that it's a matte formula, but this is just a patchy mess. I have other matte lipsticks that aren't as patchy. I'm not a huge fan of Too Faced lipstick overall. I love their liquid matte and melted formulas, but the actual stick is the worst. I have another lipstick from them, from the La Creme line and I just don't reach for it. 

For my peach lipstick in shocking pink, I've tried everything. I scrub and moisturize my lips, but nothing works. I will never buy another lipstick from Too Faced again. The color skips, the application is patchy and this isn't even incredibly matte either. It's a creamy matte formula. It also has the shower gel peach scent, something I don't care for on my mouth.

The color is off. On my lips, the color looks lighter than when swatched. It starts to fade very quickly and doesn't have much pigmentation when applied. One of my coworkers even mentioned how that color looks a bit off on me and I always wear colors like this. 

Overall I think this is an OK collection. I wish that Too Faced could improve the formula of their lipsticks. The only thing that I would repurchase would be the palette.

Too Faced Peaches, Yummy Yum Yum!! Part 1

I've been obsessed with the Too Faced Peaches line for quite some time, and OMG they just came out with a new line of peaches, the "Just Peaches Matte" collection.  Last December, I bought the Sweet Peach eye shadow palette. I think this palette was originally launched Summer 2016??? It had such a cult following that Too Faced expanded the line. 

I've posted reviews on all of the Chocolate Bar palettes, but for some odd reason, I never posted one on the Sweet Peach. This one happens to be my absolute favorite. I've used this one so much, that I've already hit pan. There were so many items in this line, but I only bought a few of the lip oils and shadows. 

The smell is amazing. When you open the palette, the shadows smell like the candy peach rings I'd eat at the movie theaters when I was little. A little bit of the powder fell into my mouth, and while I don't recommend eating them, the taste was delicious. 

The colors are so pretty, (I love them so much)!!!!!! I apply all of my shadows with primer. I hate the Too Faced Shadow Insurance, so I use either the MAC Pot in Painterly or the NYX Eyeshadow Base in White.  I don't care for the purple and black shades. The green can be tricky. Sometimes I like it and other times I have a hard time working with it. I really don't care for the black.  I don't like ANY black in ANY palette. Sometimes the colors can be a little muddy. I love the entire middle row and; Luscious, Just Peachy, Charmed I'm Sure, Peaches N' Cream, Summer Yum, and Puree. My least favorite is, Talk Deby to Me. As you can see from the swatches below, it's extremely patchy. You can't always base your decision to like or dislike a palette on swatches alone. Sometimes a shadow can swatch poorly, but look really great on the eyes. That's how I feel about my Pur Cosmetics Troll palette. The swatches were bad, but they work lovely on the eyes. I still like to watch YouTubers color swatch. It makes it easier for me to determine if I like the colors.

Apparently I purchased five Peach Lip oils in; Peach Tease (love), Peach Fuzz, Papa Don't Peach (love), Pure Peach and Peach-Sicle. I only really wear these during the spring and summer when I want a more natural look. They aren't really pigmented because they're a lip gloss. If I had to do it all over again, I probably wouldn't get these. They're all right. They taste sweet and perfumey all at the same time. These end up looking the same color on your lips anyway and they emphasize any dry patches you may have on your lips. As I mentioned before, I wouldn't recommend these. 

While I really do love the Sweet Peach palette, there are a few palettes from NYX that are very similar. They're not exact dupes, but the color scheme is similar, minus the ugly black and ok green.  Of course you're not getting the yummy scent, but for a cheaper price, they're nice. I'd say that the NYX shadows are a bit stiff, but they blend nicely. The NYX shadows are a perfect example of bad swatches vs. decent application.  For $18 a palette you can get both and it would still be cheaper than the Sweet Peach. If you're a sucker for adorable packaging and yummy scented shadows, buy the Sweet Peach Palette.

Summer 2017

It's my last official day of MY summer and I'm sitting in MY favorite spot (the coffee shop), reflecting on MY summer. While it wasn't quite the adventure of last year, I have a lot to look back on. The summer started off great. My hubby and I celebrated our nine year wedding anniversary at the fair in Del Mar. Was that an interesting adventure!! The fairgrounds were beautiful. We stayed at the Hilton, right across the street from the fair. What a convenient location to stay. We didn't have to bother with traffic, driving a car or paying for parking. We just walked to the fair. The hotel itself was pretty. Our room was standard. They had a beautiful pool, which we didn't use and an amazing bar in the middle of the grounds, with a fire place, where we could relax on couches. 

I've decided that the Orange County Fair is my favorite. Unfortunately, I didn't make it this year. By the time the OC Fair rolled around, I was very sick and we couldn't go.  I'm very upset that I missed out on Terrie's Berries. I don't like the fried fair food, so Terrie's Berries candy apples are my one splurge. There's always next year. I think we may hit up the LA county fair this year. It's been ages since I've gone and I don't think my husband ever has. 

The summer blockbusters were a bust. I didn't find much to be happy about when it came to the movies this year. Nothing really peaked my interest. There were a few I loved. Wonder Woman was amazing. I loved it! Girls Trip was super funny and The Glass Castle was great too (not funny at all). During the summer I'm usually at the movies at least once a week. Not this year. Every year I make two lists. My 10 favorite movies from January to June and then from July to December. 

I read a few books, but then stopped when I got sick. I only read three. Mini Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella, Pretty in Plain by Jen Lancaster and Blood Brothers by Nora Roberts. I've never read a book by a Nora Roberts or a Danielle Steel or a Janet Evanovich or any other author in this genre. I always felt that they were beneath me. I know that's smug and snobbish, but I have seen the light. The book wasn't bad. It was readable and fun and quick. Since it's a trilogy I have two more to go. I started reading Voyager by Diana Gabaldon. This is the book I stopped when I got sick. I love the Outlander series and have to finish this before season three this fall. 

I spent some time at the gym. I was going a lot at the beginning of the summer but stopped when I got sick. I was out of commission completely for two weeks. I didn't leave the house unless it was to a doctor's appointment. I started to emerge the 3rd week, but really maintained and continue to maintain a low profile. 

I did a no makeup buy for July and shopped my stash all month long. I have a lot of makeup. Every week I change out my eye shadow palette. I hit pan in my Sweet Peach Too Faced palette. I love that one the most. It sat on my nightstand for the weeks I was out of commission. August 31st Too Faced is coming out with their Peaches and Cream line and I'm ready. There are a few things I will be getting from that line. I didn't get much from the original line. I bought two of the lip oils and of course the shadow palette. I realized I never posted a review of the Sweet Peach palette. I'll hold off until I purchase the Peaches and Cream.

August also saw the Grand Opening of the NYX Cosmetics store in the Cerritos Mall. The Ultimate Multi Finish palette in Sugar High is amazing. I also bought the Epic Ink in Hearbreaker. It's a stain and I love it!! They were having an online sale so I bought another palette in Warm Rust and two of their Pin-Up Pout Lipsticks in Bombshell, a hot pink and Darling a light pink. Both of these palettes are great complementary palettes to the Too Faced Sweet Peach. NYX is beginning to be my favorite drug store cruelty free brand.  

When we were in San Diego, I bought a few things from 100% Pure. I've seen the brand at the Del Amo mall, but never tried anything from them. I'm trying to be more organic and pure. 

I also bought some makeup from Kiko. They're cruelty free too and I can't wait to try it out! My mom and I stopped at the mall after one of my doctor's appointments and this was my treat. I had to have a blood test that day. Instead of a sucker, I got makeup. 

My car was in the shop the first few weeks of the summer, so we were down a car. I got up every morning at 6:10 and drove my hubby to work. I would go back home and nap, but it wasn't the same. 

I bought a new laptop! It's what I'm using to write this blog. The same day, we celebrated my hubby's 47th birthday. 

I didn't see many of my friends this summer, with the exception of a few. Again, it's because I got sick. 

I spent a lot of time with these friends. Sammy and Mia playing in a box.

I love spending summer days with my dogs. They're the cutest and the best. My Mia had surgery. The day after her surgery I was in the ER.  I'm glad I had my little buddies to keep me company while I recovered. Mia went to the groomers a week before her surgery and came out with a pink tale.

One final great thing of the summer, my nephew had his major league pitching debut. I won't talk about who he is, but as a family we couldn't be more proud of his accomplishments. The middle of July, he pitched against the Angels. So many family members and friends came out to show their support.  Watching him pitch has been a major highlight of the summer. 

My summer is over and while that's sad, I have so many things to look forward to coming up in the next few months. The hubs and I have a few trips planned. One to Vegas (we go every year) and the other to Chicago!! I've never been and can't wait to explore the city. 

Too Faced Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar Review

Again, I'm a little late to the Too Faced party. These palettes have been available for a while. So far I've reviewed my Too Faced Original Chocolate Bar Palette and the Too Faced Chocolate Bon Bon Palette. I will link both of those reviews below. After Christmas and again with my gift cards, I have quite a few, I purchased the Semi-Sweet Palette. I was conflicted about purchasing it. I thought that this palette was way too warm for my skin tone. I also really didn't need it, because it closely resembles the Original Chocolate Bar Palette. You can see the the similarities in these side by side photos. The Original is cooler in tone than the Semi-Sweet.

The packaging is still the adorable chocolate bar. The Semi-Sweet case is lighter in shade. It's still made of metal and has a magnetic closure. All of the palettes are made of metal and have magnetic closures. The shade names are right on the palette.

The shades, oh my goodness, they swatch horribly!! I was so disappointed based on the swatches. I thought I was going to return the palette based on the swatches alone. The colors were not pigmented at all (and I'm very fair skinned) and were extremely patchy. These colors were very stiff and were very different from the other palettes. I was so unhappy with the purchase! The only row I liked was the bottom row. Those colors were more buttery than the rest of the colors in the palette.

I told myself I would give it a week. I vowed to use the palette for one week and if I didn't like it I would return it. I actually ended up loving it. I had more complements about my eyeshadow during my week using this palette than I've had with any of the other palettes I've used. Surprisingly these colors were very blendable.  I've created looks using Peanut Butter, a color that seems to be the most popular among the YouTube beauty bloggers, Rum Raisin, Caramel, Bon Bon, Butter Pecan, Frosting, Pink Sugar, Puddin', Coconut Creme, Cocoa Chili Truffled and Hot Fudge.  Peanut Butter is so popular that Too Faced created and entire nine shade palette around this color. I'm interested in trying that palette out too. 

With that being said, there are a few more colors in this palette that are pointless. Pink Sugar is just glitter/shimmer. There is no pigmentation. I tried using it over a lid shade, and by the evening, the glitter was gone. There aren't too many transition shades. Nougat is good and I've used Peanut Butter as a transition. Coconut Creme is barely visible on me. Caramel and Bon Bon are very pretty lid shades, but I have to pack them on with my finger. 

Overall, this was a nice palette and I decided to keep it. In order to get use out of my palettes, I am going to trade them out every week. I have to commit to using one palette for the entire week, including the special edition Christmas palettes and my Urban Decay Palette.

I think this palette is better than the Chocolate Bon Bon Palette, which I rated 3 1/2 Pink Gerber Daisies. I can't give this palette 4 stars, because this isn't a 4 star palette, so my rating for the Chocolate Bon Bon Palette will be revisited and revised.
